The Rocky Coast of Maine
May 2010
The page begins with some scenes in Portland, Maine, then there is a link taking you to the rest of the photos.
After Portland, comes scenes along the way as we travel North Northeast to Mount Desert Island & Acadia National Park.
The Light across the Bay marks the entrance to the harbor.
This lovely area is in S. Portland in the Community of Cape Elizabeth.
Because of its beautiful scenery, Lighthouse with a historic past of being
commissioned by George Washington, it became a State Park named Ft. Williams.
Opposite side shown here, it is the State's oldest historic structure completed in 1791 as a navigational
aid to ships at sea. The keeper's house is now a Museum.
Also in Cape Elizabeth is "Two Lights State Park" (not to be confused with the previous Lighthouses) about 4 miles away.
Only one of the Two Lights can be seen from this view. It is on a Rocky Coast as seen on next two photos.
Don't worry about the absence of white sand - the water is Ice Cold and no one can last long in it!
People bring folding chairs or picnic to enjoy the coast.
Booth Bay is unique in that many structures are built over water.
The sky is cloudy, there is rain, wind and it is cold enough to have our jackets on.
We were the only ones outside taking pictures.
There are excursion boats for getting to outward Islands, fishing or Puffin (a type of bird) and Whale watching.
A typical fisherman's type of boat (as well as the next photo). A permit is required to commercially fish for lobster.
The 90 foot boat (background) offers excursions to New Foundland and Labrador for up to 6 people and serves gourmet food.
We were invited up to the Steering cabin. They also operate a cruise out of Culebra Island (Carribean) during the Winter.
Interesting - and we found a Parrot in the cabin.
Unfortunately, these classic lobster traps are no longer used and are just for show. The
new ugly traps are metal cages that are cheaper to make, less costly and last longer.
